For the Museum of Modern Art’s initial presence beyond its midtown-Manhattan home, a new Design Store in SoHo, we created a contemporary retail environment within the bounds of a landmark building in a historic district. The design, which emphasizes light and suppleness, maintains some of the structural elements of the original warehouse. A polyvinyl membrane stretches across the ceiling of the space, along one wall of the ground floor, and down through the cellar floor in a continuous curve. Illuminated with a soft cool glow, this structure-within-a-structure functions as a light box, emanating light from the inside out and revealing the interior to curious passersby.
