Weberzeile, Ried im Innkreis, A

The design of the SES Shopping Center “Weberzeile” in Ried was influenced by the inner city location, the transport network, the social context and all aspects of sustainability.

The project enjoys a direct access to the Altstadtring in Ried and provides an important connection between the city center and the commercial district. ATP’s competition entry of 2011 employed a dual strategy aimed at the smooth integration of the volume of the modern shopping center into the existing urban structure: the form and proportion of the façades which face the baroque city center seek to recreate the fragmented regional style while visitors from outside town are confronted by a large volume with a generous mall entrance which marks the “gateway to the city center”.

The central square and streets of the mall layout are based on Ried’s historic urban structure. The shopping center contains more than 22.000m2 of retail, restaurant and service space as well as providing 500 jobs and Ried’s first urban underground parking garage – with 800 extra-wide spaces. At the same time, the project provided an opportunity for the City of Ried to carry out important infrastructural improvements including a ring road and feeder roads and a series of energy facilities. These included the integration of the shopping center into Ried’s new public geothermal infrastructure.
