The Treasure Box Loft
Confronted with the rough existing "shell" of the loft- bare concrete floors and ceilings, industrial aluminum window framing- the design strategy was to accept this roughness and contrast it with very precious materials and sophisticated geometries. Three main program elements were identified; three wooden "treasure boxes" were inserted into the rough shell to receive those programs: entry kitchen/ entertainment are and living area. The remaining walls were built of white painted drywall providing maximum wall space for displaying the art of the owner. A careful balance between open and enclosed volumes was achieved. The layout allows eastern southern western and northern views over Manhattan and the Hudson River.
