Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) – Air Navigation Services Academy
HGesch
The grounds of what is today the Offiziersheim (Officers Quarters) property of the Federal Armed Forces the publicly accessible part of the Kaufbeuren Air Base is earmarked as the location for a future training campus for military air traffic control, where as of 2019 the Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS) will annually train up to 80 military flight controllers and briefing officers.
The training campus consists of accommodation buildings (m2s müllerschurr.architekten) and a new building for the Air Navigation Services Academy (HENN).
The academy building is characterised by its two saddle roofs, which draw their form from the roof pitches of the surrounding constructions.
The entrance in the southern part of the building merges into the atrium, which acts as a central access structure connecting the functional areas with each other. The canteen, administration, and the training and simulator rooms are arranged over three upper storeys. The centrepiece of the building is a tower simulator, which with the aid of a 360° projection replicates real-time flight operations.
The two adjacent accommodation buildings are to be renovated and given a new insulated wooden facade, providing 80 rooms for course participants.
